COURSE OBJECTIVES

Through this series of two short courses, targeted at youths between 15 to 19 years old, you will be introduced to trends and issues that are impacting our lives today and tomorrow. This is also a great opportunity to foster your soft skills, imagination, courage, and confidence, and have the opportunity to attend classes at NUS. Come with an open mind and have fun!

This programme is organised by Temasek Foundation and the National University of Singapore.

PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS

YOU can help build the future of Singapore! Find out how you can be a committed citizen with faculty from NUS through two exciting interactive workshops lined up:

epidemic-web Workshop 1: Building a Society for the Third Age (5 days)

In collaboration with the Social Inclusion Project, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy

By 2030, a quarter of Singaporeans will be aged 65 and above. Building a society that meets older people’s needs for safety, mobility, community, participation, well-being and financial security will be the defining challenge of our time. Inspired by the national Action Plan for Successful Ageing, this course takes a deep dive into ageing and social inclusion through three modes of learning.

Classroom lessons will present perspectives from a variety of academic disciplines such as urban planning, architecture, geography, sociology, economics, public policy, social work and nursing. You will then apply concepts to practical problems in hands-on workshops, before going on fieldtrips to meet the people at the forefront of making our society fit for the third age. The course will expose you to the diverse and innovative interventions that are taking place in Singapore and invite you to envision your own contributions in future.

*subject to updates in accordance to prevailing Safe Management Measures.

atom-web  Workshop 2: What is Quantum Computing? (2 days)

In collaboration with the Centre for Quantum Technologies

Almost every electronic device we use today are examples of how quantum physics has impacted our lives. The second quantum revolution has been the talk of many, and some forecast that the quantum industry will be a multibillion-dollar industry by 2030. This programme introduces quantum computing concepts, rooted in physics, and the applications of quantum computing in real life. Through this programme, students will be aware of the role of quantum computing in this digital age, e.g., encryption, and be exposed to applications and careers related to quantum computing, e.g., cyber security.

OUTLINE

Day 1:

  • An overview of the technology-infused world today – what do these buzzwords mean?
  • Introduction to Quantum Computing concepts and applications with real-life demonstrations
  • Assigned time to work on group project

Day 2:

  • Experiential sharing by professionals and scientists about their career path in quantum computing
  • Group project presentations with fellow peers

Pre-requisites

Open to youths in Singapore between 15 to 19 years old

MODE OF DELIVERY

Face-to-face workshops*

*Subject to prevailing Safe Management Measures; classes will be delivered “live” via Zoom if face-to-face sessions are not possible.

  • 100% attendance and completion of project or class activities.

LECTURERS

 Berge Englert Dr Berge Englert
Professor, NUS Faculty of Science and Principal Investigator, Centre for Quantum Technologies

Dr Berthold-Georg Englert is a Professor at the Department of Physics, NUS Faculty of Science, and Principal Investigator at the Centre for Quantum Technologies. In 2006, he was recognised for outstanding contributions to theoretical research on quantum coherence. Prof Englert's principal research interests concern applications in quantum information science, but he is also known for his early work on quantum optics together with Marlan Scully at Texas A&M University. Prof Englert was American Physical Society Outstanding Referee in 2008, and is the Scientific Secretary of the Julian Schwinger Foundation.

Prof Englert obtained his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Tübingen in 1981. He did post-doctoral research at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and obtained his Dr. rer. nat. habil. in 1990.

f_yvonne Dr Yvonne Y. Gao
Assistant Professor, NUS Faculty of Science and Principal Investigator, Centre for Quantum Technologies

Dr Yvonne Gao is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Physics. She is awarded the National Research Foundation Fellowship (Class 2020) to build modular quantum devices with superconducting circuits. She is currently working on research that involves superconducting quantum circuits, building modular quantum hardware and devices for scalable quantum computing and understanding of complexities in condensed matter physics. She has obtained a Bachelor Degree in Physics from Oxford University and a Ph.D., Master of Philosophy and Master of Science from Yale University.

ng-kok-hoe

Dr Ng Kok Hoe
Head, Case Study Unit and Senior Research Fellow, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy

Dr Ng Kok Hoe is Senior Research Fellow and Head of the Case Study Unit at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, where he also leads the Social Inclusion Project, a research programme dedicated to analysing the role of public policies in creating opportunities for participation. He received his PhD in Social Policy from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) where he was a UK Commonwealth Scholar and won the Titmuss Prize.
