NUS SCALE Human Interest Stories Chris Yap

Learning and Development Manager Chris Yap now has the tools to ensure that his HR department’s processes advance the company’s broader goals, thanks to NUS’ data analytics course.

14 September 2021 — Good people management is the cornerstone of a successful organisation. Today, companies are increasingly looking to Big Data to inform hiring decisions, reduce attrition and measure employee development. Assessing the outcomes of multiple training programmes with a critical lens is something that Chris Yap, the Regional Learning and Development Manager at financial institution CGS-CIMB Securities, is familiar with.

“My role requires me to work with leaders in developing and implementing learning strategies and programmes that are aligned with the organisation’s objectives,” he said.

Yap enrolled in the National University of Singapore’s (NUS) HR Analytics course to learn how to make decisions guided by data. The two-day course introduces analytics-based techniques to help improve staff recruitment, development and performance

“The course has equipped me with the basic fundamentals of HR analytics and the opportunities to apply various data analytics techniques through multiple scenario-based exercises,” he said.

Back at his company, the busy professional swiftly put his new-found skills to practice. “I mapped out how much time and money have been spent on training and development and presented this to the department heads. Based on this, I shared an overview of whether they have achieved the organisation’s and department’s development goals,” he said.

Yap remains positive in the face of digital disruption. “Change is inevitable and should not be feared. Embrace it with an open mind and you may be surprised that with the right incentive and attitude, an old dog can learn new tricks,” he concluded.
