MEM Cares
During the COVID-19 Circuit Breaker in Singapore, a group of recent MEM alumni founded MEM Cares, an initiative which aims to encourage sustainable practices amid the Circuit Breaker. Led by Associate Professor Audrey Chia, MEM Cares also conducted a survey on the use of disposable cutlery and utensils while purchasing food takeaway and deliveries in Singapore. These alumni were: Maggie Chan, Alvin Seo (UN Global Compact SDG Pioneer 2019), Chang Lee Ming, Isaac Sadikin, Shaleen Shahrin, and Sharmine Tan, and were supported by current MEM student, Samantha Thian, for her infographics.
Their key findings were featured in local and international media such as The Straits Times, Channel NewsAsia, Today, Business Times, Channel 8 and Bloomberg. We are proud that our students and alumni have prompted discussion and awareness of environmental problems, and acted to address them.
NUS Day of Service 2019 - Semakau Landfill Visit and Beach Clean-up (7 September 2019) - organised by MEM Alumni Group
Semakau Island, Singapore's only Landfill, may get filled up by 2035 at our current rate of waste generation. This is not sustainable. The government has designated 2019 as the "Year Towards Zero Waste". We aim to build awareness on the urgency of waste reduction, and includes beach clean-up activities. Semakau also has flora and fauna for us to understand how they function as bio-indicators of the surrounding land and water quality.
