BTech Engineering

NUS Bachelor of Technology in Engineering



The NUS Bachelor of Technology (BTech) programme is specially designed for polytechnic graduates working in the industry and taught by highly-qualified faculty members in advanced teaching facilities at NUS.

Offered by NUS Faculty of Engineering in partnership with NUS SCALE, the degree is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Board (EAB) of the Institute of Engineers Singapore (IES).

The BTech curriculum is delivered via a modular structure that allows students to study at their own pace, posing minimal disruption to their personal and work commitments.

Programme Fees

Admission Requirements

 
  1. Be at least 21 years old.
  2. Have at least a Polytechnic Diploma in a relevant field of Engineering or equivalent local / foreign qualifications.
  3. Fulfilled one of the following:
    1. have at least 2 years of full-time work experience; OR
    2. have fully discharged their National Service (NS) liability; OR
    3. are currently employed on a full-time basis.

    Part-time employment will not be considered as full-time work experience. A part-time employee is one who works for less than 35 hours a week, under contract of service with an employer.

Important Notes:

A) You may additionally submit any of the following information, which will be advantageous to your application:

  1. Evidence of additional post-diploma academic preparation, including the advanced diploma, specialist diploma and SAT I Test.
  2. Availability of company sponsorship.

B) Applicants may be required by the Admission Committee to sit for entrance examinations for further assessments.

C) For BTech (Industrial & Management Engineering) and BTech (Supply Chain Management) programmes, individuals who hold a Polytechnic Diploma or equivalent, in any discipline with evidence of strong mathematical or analytical content, can be considered for admission.

D) Exemption from the age and work experience requirements may be granted to Singapore Citizens (SC) and Singapore Permanent Resident (SPR) applicants if:

  1. Sponsored by the company for the part-time undergraduate degree programme; OR
  2. Currently employed in a job role / sector related to the part-time undergraduate degree programme.

Notwithstanding these exemptions, NS-liable applicants must have fully discharged their full-time NS liability before they can be admitted. Supporting documents(s) must be submitted, together with the admission application, for assessment. NUS reserves the right to determine if exemption would be granted, and the University's decision will be final and binding.

Application Fee
The application fee is $50 (excludes prevailing GST) per programme/course selected. Applicant may select up to a maximum of 5 programmes/courses per application and are allowed to submit only one application per intake.

Note:

  • Application fees are non-refundable and non-transferable.
  • The University reserves the right to review the fees as necessary and adjust accordingly without prior notice.

  • Acceptance of the admission offer can only be done via the SCALE Online Application Portal.

Information to note before applying
  1. Applicants may be required by the Admission Committee to sit for the entrance examinations as part of their admission requirements.

    Note: There will be no make-up arrangement if the applicant is unable to sit for the entrance examinations on the scheduled dates. Application will be considered as withdrawn if the applicant is unable to sit for the entrance examinations as required.

  2. All 2½-year part-time local diploma holders are only allowed to apply for admission after successful completion of their local diploma. They must complete all three BTech Engineering Bridging Units (BEBUs) and are required to sit for all end-of-unit examinations. Applicants applying to BTech (Industrial & Management Engineering) and BTech (Supply Chain Management) may choose any of the discipline units offered.

  3. All other applicants may be required to sit for Introductory Engineering Mathematics entrance examination and/or the respective discipline unit entrance examination based on the BTech course applied.

    Example: An applicant applying for admission to BTech (Electronics Engineering) may be required to sit for Introductory Engineering Mathematics and/or Electronics Engineering entrance examination(s). However, applicants applying for admission to the BTech (Industrial & Management Engineering) or BTech (Supply Chain Management) may be required to sit for Introductory Engineering Mathematics entrance examination only as there is no discipline entrance examination

BTech Engineering Preparatory Units (BEPU)

Introduction

The BTech Engineering Preparatory Units (BEPUs), administered by NUS SCALE, are short, refresher courses specially designed for diploma holders entering tertiary study. These Units are aimed at strengthening the foundation of students in Engineering Mathematics and basic engineering topics so that they will be able to cope better with the BTech Programme, if they are admitted. The syllabi of these Units are designed to be similar to those required for the entrance examinations.

IMPORTANT:
Holders of 2½-year Continuing Education and Training (CET) Part-time Local Diploma in Engineering/Applied Science/Business Practice/Infocomm Technology are required to sign up for the BTech Engineering Bridging Units (BEBUs).

  1. Applicants/Students of the BTech Engineering Programme at NUS
  2. Anyone with a polytechnic diploma or equivalent (except for holders of 2½-year Continuing Education and Training (CET) Part-time Local Diploma in Engineering/Applied Science/Business Practice/Infocomm Technology who are required to take up the BEBUs)

$800 each unit

Note:
  • Deadline to register and make payment for each BEPU will be indicated in the payment portal accordingly.
  • Each Unit comprises a total of 8 lectures and 4 tutorials, each of 3 hours' duration.
  • Should there be more than 1 tutorial session available (i.e. morning and afternoon sessions), applicants will be informed via email after the closure of registration, to book their preferred session through a booking portal. Please note that the session that is chosen will apply to all 4 tutorials. For example, if you have chosen the morning session, all 4 tutorials will be in the morning and you will not be allowed to change / swap classes after the booking period is closed. There will be limited seats available for each session and is on a first-come-first-served basis.
  • A Unit may not be offered if there is insufficient number of applicants who have registered for the Unit.
  • For details on the Entrance Examinations, please refer to “Entrance Examinations Schedule”.
  • The Lecture and Tutorial sessions are subject to change at our discretion.

Registration for Units

If you are interested to register for the BEPUs but did not apply to our BTech Programmes or Certificate Courses, you may complete the registration form and submit to scale.admissions@nus.edu.sg with the necessary documents. Payment method will be informed via email after your registration form is received. Please note that you are to submit the registration form and make payment of the non-refundable course fee to SCALE as least 7 working days before the course start date.


Certificate

Applicants who achieve 75% attendance will be issued a Certificate of Attendance upon request.

BTech Engineering Bridging Units (BEBU)

Introduction

The BTech Engineering Bridging Units (BEBUs), are short intensive courses specially designed for holders of 2½-year part-time engineering diplomas intending to pursue tertiary study. These Units are aimed at strengthening the foundation of students and address curricular preparation or transition in Engineering Mathematics and basic engineering topics so that they will be able to cope better with an Engineering degree programme such as the BTech Programme.


Who is eligible?

It is mandatory for holders of 2½-year Continuing Education and Training (CET) Part-time relevant Local Diploma in Engineering/Applied Science/Business Practice/Infocomm Technology

Course Fee

Only Singapore Citizens and Singapore PRs who meet the subsidy criteria and are considered eligible by the Admission Committee may enjoy the subsidised fee to attend the BTech Engineering Bridging Units (BEBUs).

The fees are:

  1. $1,220 (for eligible Singapore citizens – after subsidy)
  2. $1,660 (for eligible Singapore Permanent Residents – after subsidy)
  3. $4,500 (for non-eligible Singapore citizens and Singapore Permanent Residents; and International Students)
Note:
  • An applicant is allowed to enjoy the subsidised fee only once.
  • Fee is non-refundable, non-transferable and excludes prevailing GST.
  • Teaching materials will be provided 2 days before the first lesson upon full payment of fee.

Assessments, Results and Certificates

Each Unit comprises a total of 8 lectures and 4 tutorials, each of 3 hours' duration. Each Unit also includes additional mid-term test, laboratory, assignment components and an end-of-Unit examination and the overall results will be used as a factor for admission selection purpose to the BTech Engineering Programme/s applied to.

Applicants who attend at least 10 out of the 12 sessions will be issued a Certificate of Attendance upon request.
