Youth Programme: Materials Properties, Applications and Selection

COURSE OBJECTIVES

This short course will introduce the main classes of engineering materials making materials, as well as their fabrication processing, properties, functions and applications in industries. These materials include metals and alloys, ceramics, polymers and composites. It will cover iron and steels and their applications, ionic and covalent ceramic materials and their applications, various polymer structures and their applications, composites materials and their applications, interaction between materials and environment and materials fabrication. The selection of materials for particular industry applications will also be introduced.

By joining this course, participants will be able to:

  • understand the properties of various steel materials and their applications.
  • explain the properties of ceramics based on their structures.
  • interpret various polymer structures and their properties.
  • select suitable materials for their engineering designs in different environments.
  • have basic knowledge of materials fabrication.
