Physics Challenge Camp

I participated in the 2019 NUS Physics Challenge Camp at the Department of Physics in my first year of high school. At the camp, I enjoyed the best campus life in UTown. I relished the fantastic lectures and tutorials held by NUS Professors and visited state-of-the-art research facilities such as SSLS, the Centre for Quantum Technologies, and the Center for 2D Materials, etc.

My true interest in the fields of Science and Engineering began during my participation in the Physics Challenge Camp. I still remember the question we were presented with by the professor, "Why do the dimples on a golf ball's surface make it fly farther?". Through careful planning and trials, I concluded that this experiment was difficult to conduct under normal circumstances. However, this didn't stop me from trying further. After combining ideas from articles offered by NUS Professors, I used engineering methodologies to prove this physics theory and I successfully derived dynamic equations of the drag forces experienced by a golf ball using MATLAB and built up a laminar flow field to simulate the experiment with the aid of COMSOL Multiphysics. I finished a research report on the golf problem in my last year of my high school and strongly feel that computer-aided modelling, an engineering method, creates a new language to explain science, ultimately providing theoretical solutions to extant problems.

Journalism and New Media

In this summer filled with full of challenges and opportunities, l was honored to participate the summer programme on Journalism and New Media at the National University of Singapore. This short but fulfilling learning experience not only gave me a deeper understanding of journalism and new media, but also enabled me to gain valuable growth in cross-cultural exchange. At the beginning of the programme, l was deeply attracted by the rigorous academic atmosphere and advanced teaching facilities of NUS. in the classroom, the excellent professors of NUs opened the door to journalism and new media for us with their rich professional knowledge and unique insights. l deeply appreciate that in this era of information explosion, journalists not only need solid skills in writing, editing and evaluation, but also need to have keen insight and judgement to sift out valuable information and deliver it to the public. During my study, l met many like-minded students. We came from different provinces and cities, with different cultural backgrounds and academic experiences. In group discussions and classroom interactions, we shared each other's views and insights, and sparks of ideas collided. This kind of cross-cultural communication made me understand more that news and new media have no borders, they connect every corner of the world and convey the common voice and emotion of human beings.

展望未来，我希望能够将这次研学项目的所学所得应用到实际的工作和生活中。我将继续努力学习提升自己的专业素养和实践能力;我也将积极参与各种新闻实践活动，丰富自己的经验和见识。我相信，只要保持对新闻事业的热爱和追求，我一定能够在这个充满挑战与机遇的领域中走出一条属于自己的道路。
