OVERVIEW
The Mathematics Bridging Course prepares applicants for the mathematical demands of the NUS Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) programme. It builds up the foundational mathematics required for the degree, so that participants begin their studies with the skills and confidence to handle the quantitative side of computing.
The course covers pre-calculus, basic geometry in two dimensions, and an introduction to calculus, and shows how this mathematics is applied in computing, including problems and algorithms drawn from artificial intelligence, machine learning and neural networks.
Shortlisted applicants who are required to undertake the Mathematics Bridging Course will be assessed based on their overall performance in the course, including both the Continuous Assessment (CA) and the end-of-course Mathematics test. Applicants required to take the course will be notified accordingly.
ELIGIBILITY
The course is compulsory for:
- Applicants who are required by the Admission Committee to demonstrate their mathematical readiness for the BIT programme, and
- Applicants who hold a two-and-a-half-year part-time local diploma.
Applicants who receive an offer to the programme and are not required to take the Mathematics Bridging Course may also enrol in the course if they wish to refresh their mathematics before starting the programme.
COURSE COMPONENTS
The course is conducted over eight weekly sessions. Participants study the online learning materials before each session and use class time for practice, problem solving and consultation, with the mathematics concepts applied to computing problems throughout.
For details of the topics covered, please refer to the Mathematics Bridging Course Syllabus.
Assessment consists of continuous assessment (CA) conducted in class and an end-of-course Mathematics Test. The assessments are designed to assess an applicant's readiness to undertake undergraduate studies in the BIT programme.
The overall performance in the CA and end-of-course Mathematics Test will be considered in the admission selection.
The course will be offered only if there is a sufficient number of registrations to form a class.
