Youth Programme: Innovation and Entrepreneurship

COURSE OBJECTIVES

What is innovation? When is a disruptive innovation, disruptive? Where do innovations come from? How do you create a “moat” to protect and appropriate the full value of your innovation? Synthesising from the vast literature, this course will provide participants with the theories and examples that allow them to gain an in-depth understanding and skills to manage both product and service innovations. 

Upon completing the program, participants should be able to: 
• recognize and differentiate various types of innovation; 
• connect the links between users, value propositions, and ways of delivering the values; 
• design ways to protect one’s innovation. 

Who Should Attend

Undergraduate students from engineering.

Pre-Requisites

Participants are expected to be able to read, write and communicate in English, as the programme will be conducted in English.

Participants are required to bring their own laptop, charger and universal travel adaptor (for international participants) throughout the duration of the programme.

There are no subject-matter specific pre-requisites.

Instructor 1:

Associate Prof. Kenneth G. Huang

NUS College of Design and Engineering

Prof. Kenneth G. Huang is an Associate Professor (with tenure) at the National University of Singapore (NUS) in the Department of Industrial Systems Engineering and Management (ISEM), College of Design and Engineering, and Department of Strategy and Policy, NUS Business School. He is the Academic Director of the Master of Science (MSc.) in Management of Technology and Innovation at NUS.

His research focuses on innovation and technology management, entrepreneurship, intellectual property management, digital and global strategy, science and technology policy. He serves as the Senior Editor and on the editorial boards of several leading journals. He has won several international research and best paper awards and has published extensively in high-impact, leading journals such as Science, Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Journal of Management, Journal of International Business Studies, Research Policy, Nature Biotechnology and PNAS. He is also an award-winning educator for the courses he designed and taught at NUS, Singapore Management University and MIT Sloan School of Management. He earned his Ph.D. in Technology Management and Policy from MIT. He also holds M.S. degree in Technology and Policy from MIT, and B.S. degree in Biomedical Engineering and Electrical Engineering from the Johns Hopkins University.

Assistant Professor Wei Yu

NUS College of Design and Engineering

Dr. Wei Yu is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial Systems Engineering and Management at the National University of Singapore. She has published in top entrepreneurship and management journals. Wei teaches entrepreneurship and technology management courses at the National University of Singapore, focusing on human elements in the innovation process.

Associate Professor Annapoornima M. Subramanian

NUS College of Design and Engineering

Annapoornima M. Subramanian is an Associate Professor at the Department of Industrial Systems Engineering and Management, National University of Singapore. Her research interests include how human capital and inter-organizational collaborations affect innovation performance of firms.

Dr. Subramanian’s research has appeared in journals including Journal of Operations Management, Production & Operations Management, Research Policy, Journal of Business Venturing, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Technovation, Journal of Technology Transfer, Long Range Planning, Journal of Engineering and Technology Management, and Research-Technology Management. She received her Ph.D. degree in management of technological innovation from the School of Business, National University of Singapore.

Associate Professor Chai Kah-Hin

College of Design and Engineering

Kah-Hin Chai is currently an Associate Professor at the Industrial Systems Engineering and Management Department, National University of Singapore. His research and teaching interests include product and service innovation, problem-solving, and energy efficiency.

His work has appeared in journals such as Journal of Product Innovation Management, IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management, Technovation, and Journal of Service Research. Prior to joining NUS, he worked in the semiconductor manufacturing and management consulting industries. He obtained his PhD degree from Cambridge University in 2000.
