Youth Programme: Sustainability Awareness, Leadership Development, Cultural Appreciation and Community Engagement (SLC Programme)

COURSE OBJECTIVES

This 2-week residential youth programme, specially curated for pre-university and high school students age 15 - 18, is designed to deepen sustainability awareness and empower the future change makers with creative problem solving skills to create a sustainable future in their own community.

Through experiential learning activities including thematic seminars and discussion, learning journeys to heartlands and interaction with local communities, the programme will explore sustainability through the following themes: intergrating the built and natural environment, integrating public and private space, appreciating human development across lifespan, communication processses and strategies for effective sustainability communications. Participants will also be guided on an exciting journey to explore Singapore's culture scenes, through the lens of local food.

At the end of the course, the participants will be able to:

  • Enhance sustainability awareness at the individual, community and city sacle, aligned with the UN Sustainbility Development Goal SDG#11 of making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. 
  • Examine leadership concetps and gain an awareness of one's leadership potential in the local community.
  • Develop a deeper appreciation of the local communities and culture in Singapore, uising an immersive and experiential learning format.
  • Gain confidence in inter-cultural communitcation through interacting with peers from different social and cultural background.
  • Apply creative problem solving skills to create a sustainable future.

Who Should Attend

Pre-University and high school students in Grade 10 - 12, with an interest in sustainability. 

Pre-Requisites

Participants are expected to be able to read, write and communicate in English, as the programme will be conducted in English.

Participants are required to bring their own laptop/tablet, charger and universal travel adaptor (for international participants) throughout the duration of the programme.

There are no subject-matter-specific pre-requisites to attend this programme. 

Applicants must be at least 15 years old at the start of the programme to be eligible to apply. 

Programme Schedule

23 June to 6 July 2024.

Check-in to NUS accommodation: 23 June 2024, 2 PM Singapore time.
Check-out from NUS accommodation: 6 July 2024, 12 PM.

Mode of Delivery

Face-to-face programme with compulsory 13-night on-campus stay.

Programme Fee

The programme fee is SGD 6,758 per participant per programme, which includes:

  • Professional and administrative fee,
  • 13-night on-campus accommodation,
  • Meal voucher or food of equivalent value, for lunch on programme day,
  • Soft copy of course materials, online and on-site support,
  • Camp T-shirt and welcome package.

  • Local transport for activities not arranged by NUS SCALE, insurance and other personal expenses are not covered in the programme fee. NUS SCALE strongly encourages participants to purchase their own health and travel insurance prior to the start of the programme.

    Mode of Assessment

    Participants will be evaluated based on class participation, leadership component assessment, sustainability awareness - annotated photo essay and presentation. More details will be briefed at the start of the programme. 

     

    COURSE INSTRUCTORS

    Below are the faculty members who have developed the course, and taught the programme in the past (names are arranged in alphabetical order):

    Upon graduation from NUS in 1985, Dr Tan Lai Yong worked as a doctor in Singapore. In 1996, he and his wife, and one year old daughter moved to Yunnan, China, and joined a community development team, working with the poverty affected in remote villages, caring for orphans, disabled children and leprosy affected. During his fifteen years in Yunnan, he cycled 30 km daily, created innovative ways to teach health and hygiene to the different Minority Ethnic groups and villages, planned for “surgery camps” for cleft palate babies and other disabled people, and also initiated tree planting (e.g. walnut) efforts that led to thousands of trees being planted to help raise farm income and also reduce soil erosion.

    As part of the China National Day celebrations in 2004, Lai Yong was given the Friendship Award for Foreign Experts at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, an event that was graced by Premier Wen Jia Bao. Lai Yong was also given the Singapore International Foundation (SIF Award) presented by Mr. Lee Hsien Loong and the 2005 Singapore MILK Fund (Mainly I Love Kids) Award for Outstanding Youth and Children’s Worker by President Nathan. In 2007, the Yunnan Provincial TV Station ran a series on people in Yunnan and the viewers voted Dr Tan Lai Yong as one of the “Good Citizens of Kunming”. Lai Yong has written several books and his first book, “Biting the Bamboo” – Experiences of Work and Life in Yunnan, is in its 5th printing. He also wrote the book, “Two Ears but Only One Mouth – Reflections on Wisdom in Rural Yunnan” and “Pilgrims” – a photo journal of life in a Dai Village in Xishuangbanna. He is married and has two children who are now young adults.

    Associate Professor Peace Wong Yuh Ju is an Associate Professor with the Department of Social Work and teaches practice modules at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She has graduated with a PhD from NUS in 2014, and specialises in social work supervision, youthwork and field education. She excels in her teaching and was awarded the Faculty Teaching Excellence Awards (FTEA) yearly from 2014-2022. In addition, she was awarded Annual Teaching Excellence Award (ATEA) in 2017/18 and 2018/19 & 2022 and was placed on the Honours Roll (2023). She enjoys teaching and has joined the NUS Teaching Academy Executive Council to contribute her service in education development.

    Prior to joining NUS, Dr. Peace Wong has worked at the government and social service sector in management, direct service, as well as research to enhance social work practice with children and youths, as well as their families. At present, she actively serves the community through her involvement in the Advisory Board and Discharge Committee & Independent Review Panel (IRP) with MSF, SHINE Children & Youth Service, Counselling & Care Centre, Singapore Association of Social Workers (SASW), Fei Yue Community Services – Advisory Committee for Research (ACR) and Student Advisory Committee with a primary school. She was awarded the Friend of MSF Award in 2019, which is presented to individual volunteers or organisations which have made significant contributions to committees or projects under the purview of MSF. She is also involved in several consultancy projects with the government and social service sector in research, curriculum development and social work supervision. In addition, she actively promotes the understanding of social work supervision in Singapore through writing, teaching, organising social work supervision seminars and developing Social Work Supervision Guide and competency domains.

    As a passionate educator, Dr. Peace Wong hopes to foster in students a curiosity towards life and learning. She loves the nature and enjoys listening to music, cooking, reading, traveling and climbing Bt. Timah Hill.

    Successful participants who fulfill all program requirements, including meeting the minimum attendance and passing the assessment, will be awarded an e-Certificate of Completion and Assessment Report issued by NUS SCALE.
