Course Objectives

The ultimate intelligent machine is a robotic system endowed with a flexible and adaptable electro-mechanical structure that is inherently safe in its motions and interactions, coupled with intelligence at different levels of granularity including cognitive capabilities approaching or perhaps exceeding human capabilities in certain aspects.

This course provides a comprehensive introduction to robotic manipulators and systems. Various related topics of importance are also introduced and discussed in relation to the robotic system. It covers what robots can and cannot do today and reviews the current challenges that scientists and technologists are addressing. It will provide a preview of the future in which robotic systems play a central role in our everyday lives.

At the end of the course, the participants will be able to:

  • Gain an understanding of what a robotic system is, its different components and how they interact with each other;
  • Understand the different terminologies & terms and how they fit in the bigger picture of an intelligent system;
  • Gain insight on what robots and robotic system can and cannot do today, the challenges faced and what opportunities lies ahead.
  • Better decide how best to use a robotic system, and learn about their applicability.

Mr. MARCELO H. ANG, JR

 

Marcelo H. Ang, Jr. received the B.Sc. degrees (Cum Laude) in Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management Engineering from the De La Salle University, Manila, Philippines, in 1981; the M.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1985; and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York, in 1986 and 1988, respectively. His work experience includes heading the Technical Training Division of Intel's Assembly and Test Facility in the Philippines, research positions at the East West Center in Hawaii and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a faculty position as an Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at the University of Rochester, New York.

In 1989, Dr. Ang joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the National University of Singapore, where he is currently an Associate Professor, with a Joint Appointment at the Division of Engineering and Technology Management. He also is the Acting Director of the Advanced Robotics Centre. His research interests span the areas of robotics, mechatronics, and applications of intelligent systems methodologies. He teaches both at the graduate and undergraduate levels in the following areas: robotics; creativity and innovation, applied electronics and instrumentation; advanced computing; product design and realization. He is also active in consulting work in these areas. In addition to academic and research activities, he is actively involved in the Singapore Robotic Games as its founding chairman and the World Robot Olympiad as a member of the Advisory Council.

2. Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy (MCES) - Singaporeans aged 40 and above may enjoy subsidies up to 90% of the programme fee.

4. Eligible organisations may claim absentee payroll funding for Singaporean Citizens or Singapore Permanent Residents attending SSG-approved courses during working hours. The absentee payroll funding is capped at $4.50 per hour and at $100,000 per enterprise per calendar year.

5. Trainees under the Workfare Skills Support scheme may be eligible for absentee payroll funding of up to 95% hourly basis salary, capped at $13 per hour.

6. Companies eligible for absentee payroll will be required to log into the Enterprise Portal for Jobs and Skills (EPJS) to process the claims.

7. NTUC Enhanced Union Training Assistance Programme (UTAP) - NTUC members enjoy 50% of the unfunded course fee support of up to $250 each year for courses supported under UTAP (Union Training Assistance Programme).
