Course Reference No: TGS-2022013128

This course is part of the Professional Development in Placemaking. Click here to find out more about the Professional Development in Placemaking.

Course Objectives

This course focuses on three select placemaking strategies/processes occurring in three specific urban and suburban spaces. They include: (a) creative placemaking in arts, cultural and creative precincts; (b) tourism placemaking in tourist attractions and leisure sites; and (c) tactical placemaking in a variety of urban contexts. The course covers both academic/conceptual insights along with practical case studies of Asian and Western cities, ensuring that participants have a comprehensive understanding of the processes, prospects and challenges in urban placemaking.

At the end of the course, participants will gain:

  • conceptual and theoretical understanding of different forms of urban placemaking, specifically 'creative', 'tourism' and 'tactical' placemaking;
  • empirical insights on Asian and Western cities, with a specific focus on the successes and challenges encountered in different urban and cultural contexts; and
  • practical tips, lessons and takeaways that can help activate placemaking initiatives on the ground.
