Course Objectives
This course focuses on three select placemaking strategies/processes occurring in three specific urban and suburban spaces. They include: (a) creative placemaking in arts, cultural and creative precincts; (b) tourism placemaking in tourist attractions and leisure sites; and (c) tactical placemaking in a variety of urban contexts. The course covers both academic/conceptual insights along with practical case studies of Asian and Western cities, ensuring that participants have a comprehensive understanding of the processes, prospects and challenges in urban placemaking.
At the end of the course, participants will gain:
- conceptual and theoretical understanding of different forms of urban placemaking, specifically 'creative', 'tourism' and 'tactical' placemaking;
- empirical insights on Asian and Western cities, with a specific focus on the successes and challenges encountered in different urban and cultural contexts; and
- practical tips, lessons and takeaways that can help activate placemaking initiatives on the ground.

Placemaking agents, place management professionals and urban planners, developers, architects and consultants.
Pre-Requisites
Degree or Advanced Diploma in any discipline.

Total of 14 contact hours on-campus.

A/Prof T.C. Chang
T.C. Chang is a tourism geographer by training, and has research interests in urban, social-cultural and tourism geographies. His research interests include Southeast Asian tourism, vernacular architecture and heritage, arts, culture and creativity in Asian cities.
He received his PhD from McGill University (Montreal, Canada) in 1997 and became an Associate Professor at NUS in 2003. A/P Chang was Deputy Head of the Department of Geography in 2006-2007; Assistant Dean (Alumni and External Relations, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, NUS) in 2008-2010; and currently Vice Dean (External Relations and Student Life, June 2010-December 2015). He was awarded the NUS Outstanding Educator Award 2006 and the Annual Teaching Excellence Award 2008.
