STEM Leaders: Big Opportunities in the Nanoworld

BIG OPPORTUNITIES IN THE NANOWORLD

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The course aims to increase young people’s basic understanding of the cutting-edge nanotechnologies by drawing an in-depth appreciation of the nanosized regime and scientists’ fascination in the field of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and its real-world applications.

The discovery of Nanotechnology involves a multidisciplinary learning of natural science physics, chemistry, mathematics and engineering and will offer students a holistic experience to build on their critical thinking and 21st century skills to be next STEM leaders.

PROGRAMME HIGHLIGHTS

  • The programme is designed with a mix of thematic discussions, tutorials, and continuous assessments format to sharpen the understanding and application of ideas learned during the lectures.
  • The module shall be taught with the help of a number of fun-filled demonstrations aiming to illustrate the concepts discussed. The students will also learn to create some nanoscale related demonstration that they can use to illustrate ideas to their friends as well.
  • Students will get a taste of a cutting-edge online learning experience at Asia's No. 1 university, and connect with world-class teaching faculty.

COURSE INSTRUCTORS

Below are the faculty members who have developed the course, and taught the programme in the past (names are arranged in alphabetical order):

Speaker
Professor Sow Chorng Haur
Head of Department of Physics, National University of Singapore

Professor SOW Chorng Haur received the B.Sc. degree (1st Class Honours) in Physics from the National University of Singapore (NUS) in 1991. After spending two more years in NUS, he received the M.Sc. degree in Physics from NUS. He went on to The University of Chicago and completed his PhD degree in 1998. During the period in 1999-2000, he worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Bell Laboratory, Lucent Technologies. He returned to NUS in year 2001.  He has authored and co-authored more than 260 papers in the field of nanoscience and nanomaterials. He is the recipient of the Institute of Physics Singapore Nanotechnology Medal 2006 for outstanding research in Nanotechnology and NUS, Faculty of Science (FoS): Young Scientist Award 2007.

As the founding director of the FoS Science Demonstration Lab, Prof Sow is very interested in developing effective pedagogy in Science Communication and the Minds-on Approach to STEM education. Prof Sow received many teaching awards at faculty and university level, including the highest NUS Outstanding Educator Award (2008). He has dedicated much of his effort to outreach with frequent popular public lectures, research opportunities for high school students in his lab, teachers workshop, contribution to textbooks etc.
