COURSE OBJECTIVES
This course will provide a strong conceptual foundation for finance. This programme has two primary objectives. The first objective is to build a strong conceptual foundation for finance. The second objective is to use finance theory to solve practical problems faced by financial managers.
By the end of this programme, participants should be able to understand the:
goal of financial management
concept of time value of money
application of various appraisal techniques
management of working capital
financial analysis of companies
Who Should Attend
Undergraduate students with strong desire to learn basics of financial management with professional terminology, but without jargon.
Pre-Requisites
Students will find it beneficial to have some basic knowledge of accounting, algebra, and statistics prior to enrolling in this course. Those without pre-requisite basic knowledge will be required to put extra effort in order to follow material.

Mode of Delivery
On-campus Programme: 15 hours of face-to-face lessons, tutorials and a final project presentation.

COURSE INSTRUCTORS

Dr Ruth Tan

Dr Ruth Tan is Associate Professor of Finance at the NUS Business School, National University of Singapore. She is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants (ICPAS) and a Fellow of CPA Australia. She has received several teaching excellence awards at NUS. She is currently a Fellow at the NUS Teaching Academy. Her case studies are widely used by top universities such as Harvard, MIT and Columbia. She has co-authored several books: “Household Finance” published in 2020; “Fundamentals of Corporate Finance” published in 2016; and “Corporate Finance” published in 2014. She is the overall supervising professor for the Enterprise 50 Educational Project since 2010. Under this project, students work with the top 50 SMEs in Singapore. She was also the overall supervising professor for SPRING’s Business Excellence program as well as National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre’s Company of Good program in 2017 and 2018. She has conducted in-house executive training for various companies such as Ikea, Sime Darby, Mitsui, Kalbe, Bridgestone, Cerebos, NKSJ Holdings and AGC. She is currently the co-director of the executive program, Accounting and Finance for non-financial managers.
CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION
Successful participants who complete all requirements of the programme including passing the assessment will receive a certificate of completion issued by NUS SCALE.
