Youth Programme: Community Youth Leaders for a Sustainable World

COURSE OBJECTIVES

This online synchronous programme is centered around the progress of and prospects for the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Prospects for achieving many of the goals depend on the implementation of public policies and programmes, as well as the values and behaviours at the individual, societal and institutional levels. The programme engages participants to be active youth leaders in their communities, by honing the following key skillsets:

  • Problem Solving
  • Critical Thinking
  • Stakeholder Engagement
  • Public Speaking

Specifically, participants will be informed about the myriad opportunities and challenges in the region in relation to the SDGs, and provided with the tools and frameworks to break down the issues and formulate personal responses to climate change and sustainability.

HIGHLIGHTS

In terms of structure, students can look forward to five weekly lessons revolving around specific themes, and a final session for them to present their insights and findings on their key takeaways from the programme in groups.

This programme is jointly taught by two instructors with complementary expertise in sustainable development, urban planning and environmental / biological sciences. Classes are fully online and conducted in a highly interactive workshop style featuring case study analyses, breakout group discussions, peer-sharing, pop quizzes etc. Students are expected to participate actively and will be given ample opportunities to share their thoughts and queries, to maximise their learning outcomes. In parallel, ‘youth leader activities’ are designed for participants to engage directly with their communities. These activities include a critical analysis of climate news and interviewing members in their community. They serve to reinforce key concepts acquired in class.
