Youth Programme: From Old to Modern: Understanding Language Change

COURSE OBJECTIVES

This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of how language changes over time, and the factors that influence these changes. The course will explore the historical context of language change, as well as its current globalized dimensions. Students will learn about the role of social, cultural, and linguistic factors in shaping the development of languages, as well as the impact of technological advancements on language use. While most of the examples will be coming from English, case studies based on other relevant languages will be discussed.

The course objectives are for students to gain an understanding of the historical context of language change and its current global dimensions as well as to explore the factors that influence language change, including social, cultural, and linguistic ones. In addition, the course will focus on developing students’ critical thinking and analytical skills to assess the different perspectives on language change and language use.

Who Should Attend

Undergraduate students from any disciplines.

Pre-Requisites

Participants are expected to be able to read, write and communicate in English, as the programme will be conducted in English.

There are no subject-matter specific pre-requisites, however those who have taken a linguistics course will have an advantage.

Associate Professor Mie Hiramoto,

Department of English Language & Literature,

NUS Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences

Mie Hiramoto is Associate Professor in the Department of English, Linguistics and Theatre Studies at the National University of Singapore (Singapore). Mie’s research interests include contact linguistics, language, gender & sexuality, language and media, Japanese and Austronesian languages. She is co-editor of the journal, Gender and Language. She also serves as an area editor for Linguistic Vanguard and associate editor for the Journal of Language and Sexuality.
