Youth Programme: Negotiation in a Global World for Young Leaders

COURSE OBJECTIVES

We negotiate all the time; be it at the international, community or individual level. In many situations, we deal with differences where it involves an exchange of ideas, or talk to people about issues that affect all parties or come to an agreement while avoiding argument or dispute. Learning essential negotiation skills helps one build stronger relationships with others, improves understanding on the concerns of all parties in a conflict and enhances your communication skills.

This five-day face-to-face course is carefully structured centered on ways to help young leaders to respond to difficult negotiation situations in a constructive manner and equip participants with useful life skills. The course teaches the principles of negotiation but more importantly, it goes deeper to understand how biases shape our interaction and behavior. Throughout the course, participants will learn about assumptions about interpersonal relationships, communication styles and how to improve your noticing, listening and questioning skills. It comprises five role-play based 3 hours lessons (including a 15 mins break) and a quiz on negotiation concepts at the end of the course.

By joining this course, participants will:

  • Learn and apply essential negotiation concepts in diverse contexts.
  • Develop the interdisciplinary skills of negotiation and how to work towards mutually beneficial solutions.
  • Discover and practice different negotiating perspectives.
  • Understand the importance of preparing for a negotiation and learn how to plan to achieve a successful negotiation
  • Use noticing, listening and questioning skills
  • Develop ways to reframe issues in a negotiation

COURSE INSTRUCTORS

Below are the faculty members who have developed the course, and taught the programme in the past (names are arranged in alphabetical order):

 Yee-Han 2

Dr Kuan Yee Han
Assistant Dean of Students, NUS
Master, UTown Residence
Senior Lecturer, Tembusu College

Dr. Kuan Yee Han received his B.Eng (Hons) in Mechanical Engineering, and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, from the National University of Singapore. He has been with Tembusu College since its pilot phase, first as a Graduate Fellow and subsequently as an educator committed to undergraduate teaching and student development. His formative experiences in student leadership, including serving as the President of the NUS Students’ Union, continue to inform his learner centred teaching philosophy.

Yee Han’s teaching focuses primarily on negotiation, with a strong emphasis on authentic and experiential learning. He designs negotiation learning experiences that mirror real interpersonal, organisational and ethical dilemmas. This enables students to practise initiating, sustaining and closing difficult conversations. Through role-play simulations and reflection, students can develop perspective taking, relational awareness and principled decision making skills that extend beyond the classroom.

His other teaching interests explores ageing, where negotiation concepts intersect with care, technology and end-of-life decision making. This help to deepen their empathy and ethical reasoning. Across his courses, Yee Han works closely with teaching assistants and student leaders as partners in learning design and facilitation. He also facilitates negotiation workshops and trains student coaches in promoting out of classroom learning. Yee Han is also a certified LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® facilitator where he conducts customized workshops to support reflection, sense-making and collaborative problem solving.
