Youth Programme: Urban Planning and Architectural Design

URBAN PLANNING AND ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN 

 

PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES

This short programme introduces various thematic design concepts in urban landscape planning. Using real-world case studies, the programme demonstrates both challenges and opportunities of future urban design and development. The programme will cover the following topics:

• Planning for Liveability and Competitiveness
• Garden City and Sustainable Development
• Business Tourism and Hotel Design
• New Town Planning, Design and Management
• Conserving the Built Environment

By the end of the programme, students are expected to demonstrate thorough integration of all major urban design considerations as taught in the program and be inclusive of relevant broader planning knowledge in the final project presentation.

PRE-REQUISITES

Undergraduate Year 2 – 3 students from landscape design, architecture and related major.

MODE OF DELIVERY

18 hours of Synchronous sessions including, tutorials and a final project presentation

MODE OF ASSESSMENT

  • Quiz, debate and round table discussion to conclude the course contents.

Adj Assoc Prof Tan Shee Tiong

National University Of Singapore

Prof Tan has over 40 years of experience as practicing urban planner and architect in Singapore, China, England and the Middle East. Projects include architectural design, building supervision and project management, regional plans, city concept plans, environmental and ecological plans, conservation and rejuvenation plans, and urban design. Several international urban design and architectural competitions were won for projects in China. He is a Chartered Architect and Chartered Town Planner and trainer for over 100 delegations of government and party officials from China on urban planning and management in Singapore.

Prof. Tan was elected the President of the Singapore Institute of Planners (2001-2003). He is the President and CEO of Interactive Architects Planners from 2004 and was a Global Director of Planning and Design for SCP Consultants (Singapore & China). He is a Senior Consultant of Smart Development Consultancy International since 2017 and currently an adjunct associate professor for NUS Master of Architecture, Master of Arts (Urban Design) and Master of Urban Planning programs

Prof. Tan was a recipient of the First Singapore Board of Architects Travelling Scholarship for undergraduates in 1970. In 2015, he was conferred the Singapore Design Golden Jubilee Award by the Singapore Government, and the Singapore Planning Pioneers Award by the Singapore Institute of Planners.

 

CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION

Successful participants who complete all requirements of the programme including passing the assessment will receive a certificate of completion issued by NUS SCALE.
